Hi.

I have just bought a 2003 Astra G 1.6 Twinport. I have performed fuel consumption calculations (with an Android fuel app) and after 7 refills, the statistical average  for URBAN driving is 10.87litres / 100km.

Immediately upon acquiring the vehicle, I had the fuel filter, oil, oil filter, air filter, park plugs, timing belt, radiator and water pump changed.

I wish to find out if this current average urban consumption is within expectations for a 20 year-old Astra and / or, is there anything recommended to try and improve this.

Thanks

David

Hi there David. Your fuel consumption doesn't sound too far off. All depends on how you drive too. I have a 1.6 Astra G Auto, and i can get between 40-50mpg. Which like you say, for a vehicle 20+ years old, is good. Mine now has over 230,000 miles on her.

Happy motoring.

I appreciate this is an old post, but:

I have a 2023 1.6 auto, 72k miles.

Wish I was getting anywhere near that consumption, I've owned it 14 years & have only managed 38mpg on long m/ way runs doing steady 60mph. Normal running about it's 33/ 35mpg.

Compared to 1.4l 16v I had before (38/43.mpg) I didn't think it too excessive. I'm a fairly steady driver eg. I used to get 43/ 58 from my 1993 1.6l cavalier! (Wish I'd still got it: utterly reliable & almost faultless).

What's your secret LOL?

I just take it steady, and let the old girl build up speed steadily, rather than caning it. She'll plod along quite happily at 60/65mph, and around my local roads I'll average a max of about 50mph, as it's all country lanes and full of farm vehicles. But when I do get out on main roads then I will 65-70. Always a smooth build up. 🙂
