Hi all, I'm after some advice on how to tell if my water pump is on its way out.

There is no squeaking from it, but it takes a while to get to running temperature, and the gauge doesn't rise unless i am sitting in traffic. I have fitted a new thermostat, and temp sensor. But its made no difference.

I was wondering if the water pump maybe wasn't pumping the water around as it should.

Any help will be greatly received.

thank you all.

Andy.

Hi Andy
It is possible that the waterpump impellor isn't working as well as it was when it was new and in the case of some old BMWs the impellor used to come off the shaft and sit idle and blocking the waterways. Remarkably, the engine gave no symptoms of any issues except for when sitting in traffic (thermosyphon system working as it should do)

Worth replacing if in doubt but also don't forget the coolant expansion cap on the reservoir as if this is faulty then it can cause the same symptoms

Hi AndyR

Just had the same issue if no noise coming from water pump it sounds good check your thermostat just changed mine and it gets up to temp a lot quicker and sits nicely between 88⁰-92⁰ hope this helps all the best.
